In Bihar state , the city of Patna a university was established to provide a better environment for the best education in the teaching field and in the research field. Nalanda Open University was established in March 1987. Nalanda Open University has 28 study centers around Bihar in cities like Jamshedpur and Ranchi and in small towns like Katihar and Bettiah, catering to the educational needs of every section of the society. The main vision of this university was to reduce the education fear from the student. It is named after the famous Buddhist University of Nalanda, the ancient seat of learning. In 1995 the Nalanda Open University Act was passed, and the university came under its jurisdiction.

The Nalanda Open University is the only University in the State of Bihar meant for imparting learning exclusively through the system of distance education. The University was established in March, 1987 by an ordinance, promulgated by the Government of Bihar. Later, Nalanda Open University Act, 1995 was passed by the Bihar Legislature, replacing the Ordinance, and the University came under the authority and jurisdiction of the new Act automatically. The University is named after the famous Nalanda University of Ancient India.

The University is recognized by the Distance Education Council (DEC), University Grants Commission, and Ministry of HRD, Government of India for imparting education through distance mode. Nalanda Open University has many departments for the undergraduates and the post graduates .The university provides graduation degree courses are B. Tech, B.E., B.A. . These all are having their different parts. And the post graduation degree courses are Masters of Arts, Some of the diploma courses are also provided for the post graduates degree courses. Some Intermediate degree programs are like Intermediate in Arts, Science, Commerce.
A library system of this university is very large .Numerous of books are available in this library for the best future of the student. A better environment is also provided for the student. All web services are also at the Nalanda University.
